Needlestick Injury Prevention – Needlestick Injury Protocols

• Never leave the needle unattended
• Do not resheath the needles
• Avoid passing unsheathed needles between staffs
• Plan for safe handling and disposal of needles before giving the injection
• Do not overfill safety boxes
• use fill line on the sharp containers
• Close the container once it reaches the “Fill Lines”
• Dispose and replace the container appropriately
• Always dispose of the sharps appropriately in the sharp containers
• Allow the sharps to drop into the container without using force

Needlestick Injury Management -What to do after needlestick Injury

Step 1 – Immediate Measure

Do’s

Wash with soap and water

Don’t s

• Do not panic
• Do not put pricked finger into mouth
• Do not squeeze the wound to bleed
• Do not use bleach or detergent

Step 2 – Reporting

• Report to immediate supervisor and department of virology
• Document the incident

Step 3 Treatment

• Establish the eligibility for PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) after needlestick injury
• Initiate within 72 hours (preferably within 2 hours)
• Follow up ( 1month, 3 month, 6 month)
